Not everyone should enter an art competition. You wouldn’t call Picasso an award-winning artist, would you, Hockney once remarked? Art prizes neither create nor validate talented artists. All they do is state that a number of judges approve of the piece, and if the art gods are smiling, they may even hand over a bag of cash as proof.

Enter these UK art competitions if you can manage the entry fees and keep your composure in the event that your work is rejected. If it is chosen, a thrilling exhibition is in store, and you can practise the winner’s shocked acceptance speech. Crossing fingers. Diabetes Photo & Art Competition

Prize:
  • Winner: €6,000 (donation to diabetes charity of choice)
  • Runners-Up: €3,000 (donation of choice)
  • Runners-Up: €1,000 (donation of choice)
What: Submissions can be graphic static 2D artwork or photographs that must be submitted electronically. Judges are looking for engaging submissions that tell the story of diabetes in line with this year’s World Diabetes Day theme with an emphasis on Education to protect tomorrow, and are creative and original.
Who: UK & International artists (18+)

Anthology Cover Art Award

The winner will receive a €500 cash prize and publication on the cover of – and editorial coverage in – a future Issue of Anthology.

Prize:
  • First Prize: €500 (plus cover and editorial feature, one year subscription)
What: Painting, printmaking, mixed media, photography and digital media

NordArt 2023

A non-profit cultural initiative based in Büdelsdorf, Germany which organises NordArt, one of the largest contemporary art exhibitions in Europe.

News: More than 200 selected artists will be notified by email or post and published on the NordArt website by the beginning of March 2023

  • Public Choice Awards: €1,000 (3 awards of €1,000 each)

Artworks Open

Since 2009, the Barbican Arts Group Trust has presented an annual performance. The shortlist is determined by two different contemporary artists each year.

  • First Prize: £1,000 (2 x winners will receive £1,000)
Show: Artworks Project Space, London (3-11 Dec 2022)
What: 2D and 3D works (no bigger than 100cm in height, width or depth)

Fees: 1 work: £12, 2 works: £24, 3 works: £33, 4 works: £40. (max: 4 artworks)

Annual Open Exhibition

The Royal Cambrian Academy of Art is accepting applications for their public exhibition that promotes and celebrates diversity in the arts.

  • Selector’s Prize: £1,000

Show: Royal Cambrian Academy of Art gallery, Conwy  (7 Jan – 25 Feb 2023)
What: Works may be 2D or 3D and in any medium and within the maximum size limit of 100cm x 100cm for 2D and a 100cm x 100cm footprint for 3D.
Who: UK & International artists (18 and over)
Fees: £15 for first work (£25 for 2 artworks, £10 for students, max 2 artworks)

Young Botanical Artist Competition

Open to artists between the ages of 16 and 25 who wish to contribute 2D botanical artworks showing trees, leaves, and everything in between.

News: 10 artists from each age category will be shortlisted. Winners announced early 2023 (date TBC)
Prize:
    • Overall Winner: £750 (1 per category)
    • Highly Commended: £250 (2 per category)
    • All winners and People’s Choice Artist will receive an art supplies bundle worth £100
Show: The Shirley Sherwood Gallery, Kew Gardens (April 2023)
What: Botanical artworks that represent their subject creatively, but with scientific accuracy. A4, A3 or A2 size.
Who: UK & International artists (Age categories: 16-18 and 19-25)
Fees: No entry fee
