David Arquette

David Arquette is an American professional wrestler and actor. In the early 1990s, he rose to notoriety as an actor through guest appearances on Friends and roles in films such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer. In April and May of 2000, he temporarily held the Heavyweight Championship in World Championship Wrestling, where he had a prominent run.

David Arquette gained a reputation in the 1990s and early 2000s as one of Hollywood’s most eccentric talents, despite not being the most crazy member of the Arquette family. After a lengthy apprenticeship in minor roles, he received his big break in Wes Craven’s “Scream” (1996) as the lovable but lightweight sheriff Dewey; the character was so popular with viewers that producers rewrote his death scene to include him in both sequels (1997 and 1999). The franchise’s success, along with his long-running marriage to his “Scream” co-star Courteney Cox, which ended in 2010, propelled him to stardom, although he seemed to prefer character roles such as the former high school jock in “Never Been Kissed” (1999) or his unabashed wrestling fan in “Ready to Rumble” (2000). In “Johns” (1996), “Dreams with the Fishes” (1997), which he also co-produced, and the gloomy Holocaust picture “The Grey Zone,” he occasionally displayed more subdued dramatic performances (2002). However, spectators appeared more forgiving of Arquette’s eccentric side, which had ample exposure through frenzied AT&T advertisements and a brief reign as WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Whether he was providing comic relief in the ring or reprising his role as Sheriff Dewey Riley in “Scream 4” (2011), Arquette was always able to have fans anticipating his next move.

Championship Wrestling in the World

After filming the World Championship Wrestling (WCW) film Ready to Rumble in 2000, Arquette was included into WCW storylines. On the April 12 episode of Thunder, he first sat in the audience before leaping into the ring to participate in a worked match.

encounter with Eric Bischoff and his stable New Blood. After forming an alliance with Chris Kanyon and the reigning WCW World Heavyweight Champion Diamond Dallas Page, he defeated Bischoff in a singles match on the April 24 episode of WCW Monday Nitro with their assistance. On the next Thunder (April 26), Arquette teamed with Page in a match against Bischoff and Jeff Jarrett, with the winner claiming the championship. Arquette won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship after pinning Bischoff for the second time in the match’s conclusion.

Throughout his reign as champion, Arquette served primarily as comic relief. As champion, he only appeared on the May 1 Nitro and May 7 Slamboree pay-per-views. During the former, a vignette made on the set of Arquette’s film 3000 Miles to Graceland with his wife Courteney Cox and co-star Kurt Russell was displayed. In the scene, Courtney tells Russell that Arquette is the WCW Champion, prompting Russell to laugh and walk away while Arquette chases him with a steel chair. In another segment of the show, he is seen backstage urinating in panic and attempting to “hand back” the championship belt. However, he successfully defended the belt against Tank Abbott with the assistance of Diamond Dallas Page.

He retained the title until the Slamboree pay-per-view on May 7. During the show, he was scheduled to defend the title against Jarrett and Page in a Triple Cage match — the same fight that served as the finale of Ready to Rumble — but ultimately turned on Page, handing the victory to Jarrett. He made a second appearance after Slamboree, cutting a promo on the May 8 episode of Nitro in which he claimed that his entire friendship with Page and title run had been a “swerve,” forcing Page to race to the ring and administer a Diamond Cutter. On August 13, at the New Blood Rising pay-per-view, Arquette made his final WCW appearance by interfering in a match between Buff Bagwell and Kanyon.

After World Wrestling Entertainment acquired WCW, WWE Magazine identified Arquette’s championship run as the leading cause of Nitro’s “failure.”

Bring back wrestling (2018-present)

Arquette has returned to professional wrestling for a few independent promotions including RJ City. He also lost a tough match against Nick Gage for the Game Changer Wrestling heavyweight championship. His facial lacerations necessitated a brief hospitalization.

Notes

Arquette was adamantly opposed to being the WCW World Champion because he believed that fans (including himself) would despise a non-wrestler winning the championship. Vince Russo, who was the WCW’s top booker at the time, argued that Arquette being the world title would be beneficial for the company’s reputation. Arquette consented hesitantly to the angle. Owen Hart (who died in a tragic accident), Brian Pillman (who died unexpectedly due to complications from an undiagnosed heart condition), Brian Hildebrand (who died from stomach and bowel cancer), Bobby Duncum, Jr. (who died from an accidental overdose of painkillers), and Darren Drozdov (who died from an accidental overdose of painkillers) received all of his WCW earnings (who became a quadriplegic after an in-ring accident).

In 2002, Arquette appeared on a professional wrestling programme, appearing in the audience at the February 8, 2002 broadcast of the World Wrestling Federation’s SmackDown! displaying a placard that reads “Former WCW World Champion.”
