Our History
In 1973, The Hungry Howie’s founder, Jim Hearn, converted a 1,000-square-foot hamburger restaurant in Taylor, Michigan (a suburb of Detroit) into a popular carry-out and delivery pizzeria. Hearn was delivered pizzas by Steve Jackson. Later, the two teamed to expand and transform Hungry Howie’s into the brand it is today.
Jackson and Hearn received their first Hungry Howie’s franchise in 1983. Within three years, Hungry Howie’s opened sixty-five franchisees, and by the end of the 1980s, we had over one hundred and sixty units. Our 300th location launched in 1995, our 400th in 1999, and our 500th in 2005. In 2004, Pizza Today magazine recognised Hungry Howie’s as “Chain of the Year.” Consistently ranked among the nation’s leading pizza chains, this brand has developed as a formidable rival in the pizza industry.
When we developed and tested Flavored Crust® pizza regionally in 1983 and brought it out nationally in 1985, Hungry Howie’s was irrevocably altered. We invented the Flavored Crust® pizza by introducing an intriguing new dimension to one of America’s most beloved dishes.

Whether it is a nationally famous charity or a local elementary school, we must all give back to deserving organizations and our local communities. Hungry Howie’s has sponsored the National Breast Cancer Foundation® since 2009 through our unique Love, Hope & Pizza programme. Each pizza sold in a pink box during the month of October will result in a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation®. We have together raised nearly $2.5 million for this worthy cause.
