The right to vote is among the most significant liberties enjoyed by US citizens. Voting is necessary to keep a democracy running smoothly.

The purpose of Google’s Doodle on National Voter Registration Day on Tuesday was to emphasise the importance of that fundamental right.

The nonpartisan civic holiday has been observed annually in September across the US since 2012 as a part of a larger campaign to register eligible residents to vote. Volunteers and groups from all over the US will take to the streets on Tuesday to inform eligible citizens who might not otherwise register about the options for voter registration.

According to data from the US Census Bureau, more than one in five eligible Americans aren’t registered to vote. However, according to the National Voter Registration Day organisation, the holiday has over the years assisted close to 4.7 million individuals in registering to vote.

According to the organisation’s website, “millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote every year because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t aware how to register.” “National Voter Registration Day wants to make sure everyone has the opportunity to vote.”

Democracy only functions when everyone can participate, as President Joe Biden stated in a proclamation honouring National Voter Registration Day on Monday. He cited the late Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights legend, who once said that “democracy is not a state; it is an act,” as an encouragement to all eligible Americans to make sure their voter registration is current.
