Early life and profession

Germanotta was born in New York City to an Italian American family. She began studying music at a young age and was performing in New York City venues by the time she was a teen. She attended Convent of the Sacred Heart, an all-girls school in Manhattan, before studying music at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. She attended Tisch for two years prior to leaving to pursue her own profession.

After dropping out, she began to evolve from Germanotta into Lady Gaga, whose style mixed glam rock and extravagant fashion design. She and the performance artist Lady Starlight established the Ultimate Pop Burlesque Rockshow in 2007. In the same year, Akon and Interscope Records signed Lady Gaga, who had previously written songs for pop musicians such as Fergie, the Pussycat Dolls, and Britney Spears, and she began prepping her 2008 debut album, The Fame.

Although she modelled herself after such theatrical performers as David Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust period, the New York Dolls, Grace Slick, and Freddie Mercury — her adopted stage name was derived from Queen’s song “Radio Ga Ga” — she created a character that came to occupy a unique position in the world of music. Her fashion, along with her fast-paced, synthesised dance music, and her edgy, theatrical performance, produced astounding sounds and images. In addition to producing music, Haus of Gaga was also responsible for Lady Gaga’s sexually charged clothing, complete with sparkling wigs and space-age bodysuits.

Success: Fame and the Monster of Fame

Her first single, “Just Dance,” was a hit in clubs across the United States and Europe and finally topped the Billboard Hot 100 Pop Songs chart (also called the radio chart). Lady Gaga is the first artist in the 17-year history of the radio singles chart to achieve four number ones from a debut album, with “Poker Face,” “LoveGame,” and “Paparazzi” also reaching number one. By the end of 2009, more than eight million copies of The Fame had been sold around the world, making it a commercial triumph of huge proportions. The album also garnered Lady Gaga five Grammy nominations, including album of the year and song of the year (“Poker Face”); she won two Grammys—best dance recording (“Poker Face”) and best electronic/dance album (The Fame); and her opening duet with Sir Elton John was one of the most talked-about parts of the 2010 Grammys telecast. In addition, she won three Brit Awards (the British Grammys) in February 2010 for best international female, best album, and breakthrough talent.

Her second album, The Fame Monster, was released in November 2009 (it was originally intended to be a bonus CD) and “Bad Romance” became a smash almost immediately. Other popular songs from the album were “Telephone” (which included Beyoncé, as well as a nine-minute video directed by Jonas kerlund starring the duo and alluding to Quentin Tarantino’s film Kill Bill: Vol.

In 2010, Lady Gaga was one of the most commercially successful musicians, with a sold-out concert tour (which had been launched to coincide with the release of The Fame Monster) as well as headlining Lollapalooza in Chicago and performing in front of a record 20,000 people on the Today show. She was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and one of the world’s most prominent women by Forbes magazine, and Billboard magazine awarded her artist of the year for 2010. Lady Gaga won awards for best pop vocal album (for The Fame Monster), best female pop vocal performance (for “Bad Romance”), and best short form video (for “Bad Romance”) after entering the 2011 Grammy Awards ceremony encased in a huge egg.

Later records

On her third studio album, Born This Way (2011), Lady Gaga drew inspiration from past musical periods. As a blonde dance-pop artist with a predilection for provocativeness, Lady Gaga frequently drew parallels to Madonna, and on the album’s first two singles, the similarities were most evident. The title track was a self-empowerment hymn in the vein of Madonna’s 1989 single “Express Yourself,” whilst “Judas” boldly combined sexual and religious images. Both tracks became instantaneous hits. Other tracks on the album featured guest appearances by Queen guitarist Brian May and Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons.

Lady Gaga release Artpop in 2013. The album was seen as a commercial failure, despite the album’s effervescent lead hit “Applause” extending her series of chart successes. The next year, she released Cheek to Cheek, a compilation of standards recorded with Tony Bennett. The album topped the Billboard 200, jazz, and traditional jazz album charts, and it won the Grammy for best traditional pop vocal album. The duo also won this prize for their second album together, Love for Sale (2021), a Cole Porter tribute.

Lady Gaga continues to record solo albums during this time. The comparatively subdued Joanne (2016) sold poorly until February 2017, when Lady Gaga’s halftime Super Bowl performance gained it favourable notice. Lady Gaga’s sixth studio album, Chromatica (2020), is a return to her earlier sound, blending disco and electro-pop.
