Similar to how Richard Harris’ granddaughter threatened to stop speaking to him if he didn’t play Albus Dumbledore, Robbie primarily accepted the role of Rubeus Hagrid because his children, Alice and Spencer, pushed him to. He wanted to do it because J. K. Rowling was exclusively interested in casting him for the role.

Robbie was awarded an OBE in 2006 for his contributions to theatre

Coltrane died on 14 October 2022, at the age of 72.

Robbie Coltrane Earlier Career

In addition to writing four separate programme scripts, Robbie produced, directed, and wrote two other shows. In total, he appeared or was credited in over 80 shows and movies, including well-known classics like Message in a Bottle with Kevin Costner, From Hell with Johnny Depp, and GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough, two James Bond movies starring Pierce Brosnan. The 1986 comedy series Blackadder II, which also starred Miranda Richardson, also had him in it. He co-starred as Charlie McManus in Nuns on the Run in 1990 with Eric Idle. Coltrane portrayed the title character in the comedy The Pope Must Die in 1991, a movie whose title caused controversy (resulting in it being retitled The Pope Must Diet in some markets).

Coltrane played the main character in the well-known UK criminal thriller TV series Cracker in the middle of the 1990s. In 2006, he returned to the role for a made-for-TV movie. He made an appearance as Daphne Moon’s stuttering brother Michael in the two-part Frasier series finale in 2004.

Coltrane provided his voice for the CGI movie The Tale of Despereaux from Universal Studios. Ciaran Hinds and Emma Watson, who played Aberforth Dumbledore and Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, also provided their voices for the movie.

After Harry Potter

Robbie later served as a voice actor again in Walt Disney Pictures and Pixar Animation Studios’s film Brave alongside Emma Thompson, Kelly Macdonald, and Julie Walters.

Behind the scenes

  • It was actually J. K. Rowling, the author herself, that suggested Coltrane to the then director Chris Columbus for the role of Rubeus Hagrid.
