FAQs Open Enrollment

I missed the deadline for open enrollment in my state. Can I Still Get Medical Insurance?

Even if you missed your state’s enrollment cutoff date, you might still be eligible for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) during which you can submit an application for health insurance. If you have gone through a qualifying life event, you may be eligible for a SEP. Events in your life that qualify include:

  • the termination of health insurance provided by an employment
  • changes in the household, including marriage, divorce, a death in the family, or the birth of a child.
  • a shift in your residential address.

View a list of life events that qualify. If you meet the requirements for a SEP, you have 60 days to enrol in a plan. However, you will have to wait until OEP to sign up for an individual health insurance policy for 2023 if you miss that 60-day window.

You can apply for a short-term health insurance plan if you are not eligible for a SEP and you missed your state’s 2022 Open Enrollment Period. In most states, you can reapply for short-term coverage for up to 36 months and obtain short-term health insurance coverage outside of OEP for up to 364 days. Given that they do not cover pre-existing conditions like Affordable Care Act (ACA) policies, short-term health insurance plans may be a suitable, temporary option for healthy individuals.

If you decide against applying for a short-term health plan because you are not eligible for a SEP, you will have to wait until Open Enrollment 2023 starts in the fall of 2022.
