Barcelona vs. Man City live updates, highlights, commentary

FULL-TIME: Barcelona 3-3 Man City

The end of a fun night is signalled by the full-time whistle, which is cheerfully received by Guardiola and Xavi.

It was a fantastic match with lots of action for a worthwhile cause. It came to an abrupt halt when Erling Haaland stumbled to earn a penalty and everyone’s thoughts turned to the hurt Mbete. However, the game as a whole was a success from every perspective.

90+8 minutes: MAN CITY, penalty! Erling Haaland, who is merely on the field, earns a penalty for the visitors as they attempt to tie the game at the very end! To be perfectly honest, Haaland’s decision to run across Christensen and then simply collapse to the ground is a hilariously poor one. Replays indicate that he just receives the tiniest taps to the back of his foot, but they don’t seem to bother him much before he suddenly faces plants. When you rewind the recording, you can actually see the precise moment when Haaland decides to fall. Unfortunate.

Riyad Mahrez advances to take, and MAN CITY SCORES! A tremendous penalty that went into the top-right corner.

90+6 min: After a halt of more than 10 minutes, we are now moving again. Six of the 11 minutes of injury time have already been spent.

89th minute: After that head-on collision, Mbete is showing promising signs. He is talking to trainers while sitting up, but he soon lies back down. After a lengthy delay, the cart is brought out, and Mbete is eventually strapped into a backboard and transported away by the cart. Players from both teams stop by to send the Man City youngster their best wishes as the board is being loaded onto the cart.

Goodness, the Barcelona goalkeepers have had a difficult night. Arnau Tenas, who just entered the game, almost committed a horrifying error in possession, but he escapes thanks to a poor heavy touch as Kevin de Bruyne closed in.

There comes a halt as Andreas Christensen, who recently replaced Jules Kounde, collides with City’s Mbete-Tabu. Mbete requires a little more attention, while Christensen is standing.

Barcelona vs Man City

Over 91,000 supporters were reportedly there. Amazing attendance for the ALS research charity match.

79th minute: Barcelona scores! Nothing Ortega could have done to stop Memphis Depay’s smashing finish! After a significant change of possession, Sergi Roberto delivers a flawless low cross to Depay in the penalty area. The Dutchman streaks in unnoticed, and it’s a terrible finale.

Arnau Tenas replaces Inaki Pena in goal as Barcelona makes a few more adjustments. Sergi Roberto is also replaced by Sergino Dest, who oddly hands young Ansu Fati the captain’s armband.

76th minute: Barcelona has a chance! Memphis Depay tries to finish off Gavi’s charge forward, but Man City’s Ortega makes the save. The backup for the City made a good stop.

The first significant display of aggression in this game occurs in the 74th minute when Palmer, who just scored, charges in and tackles Gavi. Although the referee is forgiving, a free kick is awarded in an unsafe area. Barcelona is unable to score because the ball loops into the bread basket of the goalkeeper.

70th minute: MAN CITY scores! Cancelo is a part of the play that actually brings Manchester City level, just moments after he blew a wonderful opportunity to equalise. The visitors have it too easy as Cole Palmer receives Cancelo’s cross from the right and finishes it on the doorstep.

Erling Haaland, who is going to be introduced, is seen on the sidelines conversing with Guardiola while wearing his bib off. Alvarez is the one to lose.

More changes are made by Barcelona, who replace de Jong and Busquets with Miralem Pjanic and Pablo Torre.

69th minute: Man City has a chance! Once more, the game erupted! When Man City is attempting to equalise, Julian Alvarez strikes Inaki Pena with a vicious long-range shot. Joao Cancelo receives a clear shot from the Barcelona goalkeeper, but his follow-up is blasted over the crossbar.

66th minute: Barcelona scores! Even though Frenkie de Jong is leaving Barcelona this summer, he has nonetheless made his stamp on Camp Nou. In his own penalty area, Kevin de Bruyne makes a terrible square pass that Gavi snatches, giving Barcelona the opportunity. Depay’s dribble drags the goalkeeper out, and de Jong is there to capitalise on the opportunity with a drive that ripples the net. In front are the hosts!

64th minute: The enthusiastic Camp Nou supporters, who are eager to watch the star players, applaud loudly. That happened as a result of Kevin de Bruyne replacing Bernardo Silva on the field. Silva has been strongly linked to Barcelona throughout the current transfer window. Might he return soon?

Barcelona vs Man City

After an uncomfortable 50/50 fight with a Barcelona player, Kalvin Phillips is being treated by the Man City training staff, who are supporting his shoulder. The midfielder, who transferred from Leeds this summer, did seem to be a little in pain but appeared to have complete range of motion. The two of them then chuckle, which is encouraging.

Barcelona makes numerous modifications in the meanwhile. Aubameyang, Alba, Kessie, and Gerard Pique are removed while Memphis Depay, Alex Blade, Gabi, and Eric Gacia enter the game. Aubameyang waved to the crowd, which might portend good things for his short-term club future.

Now Unzue is seen chatting with Xavi while sitting next to him in the Barcelona dugout. reminds us of the players’ goals in playing.

48th minute: Man City has a chance! How did that miss the mark? Inaki Pena makes up for the terrible error he made in the first half, which allowed Man City to score, by making two outstanding saves on Julian Alvarez. Barcelona’s goalie somehow prevents City from entering.

46th minute: Given that this is a friendly, we expected halftime adjustments, but there are fewer than we thought. Ansu Fati is introduced by Barcelona after his second-half replacement against Real Sociedad altered the course of the match. Upon Fati’s introduction, the Camp Nou supporters acclaim him.

Joao Cancelo, Josh Wilson-Esbrand, and Luke Mbete-Tabu replace Rico Lewis, Kyle Walker, and Sergio Gomez in Man City’s back line, respectively. Otherwise, every starter is still present. Throughout the second half, there will undoubtedly be a barrage of substitutes, so we’ll try to keep up.

HALFTIME: Man City 1-0 Barcelona

Although the final 10 minutes of the first half were not particularly exciting, both teams had scored by the time the halftime whistle blew.

So far, it has been a lovely match to enjoy. The game has given a tremendous platform to elevate a worthy cause, the participants are enthusiastic, and there is hardly any resentment or nitpicking. Fans have frequently been given the chance to donate during the game’s broadcast.

Frenkie de Jong jumps high into the air and over Bernardo Silva’s back before falling forcefully on his back in the 35th minute. After that difficult fall, the Dutchman carefully stands back up but appears to be okay. Silva extends a helping hand to the opponent, demonstrating once more that neither side is being aggressive because they both understand the purpose of the contest.

31st minute: As Cole Palmer launches a counterattack down the right wing, the game has really opened up. Bernardo Silva eventually stings Inaki Pena’s hands with a low shot. Goalkeeper for Barcelona is competent for the job.

29th minute: Barcelona scores! In what might be his final game for the team, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang evens the score! Sergio Busquets received a set piece that went wayward, but it fell right to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang at a tight angle, who scored the equaliser by finishing inside the near post. Ortega won’t want to look back at that play because it appeared he had the near post covered but instead he cheated to the far post and was duped.

28th minute: While some may worry about player safety during a mid-season friendly, it’s clear that this charity game carries very minimal risk. When play is stopped and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is helped up, he is beaming with Bernardo Silva. He had slipped while attempting to control the ball under pressure.

27th minute: Man City has a chance! City is almost given another by the hosts! Cole Palmer receives the ball at the top of the penalty area from Jules Kounde, who might be rusty as he waits to be registered for La Liga play. As the Barcelona defender attempted to recover, Palmer then pulls Kounde out of his boots, but the shot ultimately misses the crossbar. What a missed opportunity!

21st minute: MAN CITY SCORES! Oh no, Inaki Pena of Barcelona made a horrifying error! Pena is expected to catch a deep ball that has been lifted high over the top of the Barcelona defence, but the ball escapes his grasp. A charging Julian Alvarez is there to take advantage of the oversight and drive the ball into the goal. It is both the first goal and the first shot on goal.

Juan Carlos Unzue is then seen having a conversation with Pep Guardiola while sitting on the Man City bench next to the manager and his former Barcelona manager in a beautiful moment.

20th minute: Frenkie de Jong is set up by a lovely back-heel from Sergio Busquets, and Julian Alvarez is forced to pull the Dutch midfielder back.

17th minute: Barcelona is still attempting to score the game’s first goal. Raphinha receives an offside warning. Man City has finally had a good period of possession.

10th minute: Since the first opportunity, the game has slowed down, but Barcelona has had all of the initial opportunities. Ferran Torres comes close with a shot that is blocked after Franck Kessie hits the outside of the post.

3rd minute: Barcelona has a chance! Man City is placed under pressure at the Camp Nou right away when Aubameyang attempts to head the hosts in front after meeting a cross on the doorstep. The point-blank attempt is stopped by Ortega, who was unable to totally block the shot but managed to hold it out while the defence clumsily cleared.

First minute: The action has begun at Camp Nou! a game to support ALS research and raise money for it. both teams wearing their third set of the year.

Barcelona vs. Man City, before the game (kickoff at 9:30pm local CET)

Before the game began, the man for whom this match is being played had a chance to meet with the Barcelona team.

Just before kickoff, Unzue is addressing the large crowd gathered at Camp Nou as the starters are introduced on the field. a beautiful moment.

85,000 tickets have apparently been sold for this charity game as of the 26-minute kickoff time. Excellent, worldwide publicity for a noble cause!

With 51 minutes remaining till kickoff, Barcelona’s starting lineup has been announced. Jules Kounde, a recent acquisition who hasn’t yet registered for La Liga action, begins at center-back. With Marc-Andre ter Stegen on the bench, Inaki Pena fills the position between the pipes. Barcelona has a big 14-player bench, all of whom are first-team players, which supports the idea that the team must get rid of dead weight at the conclusion of the transfer window.

With 60 minutes remaining, the Man City lineup is announced. Pep stated first-team players will play, but that isn’t quite the case with the starting lineup. The team, which also includes Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva, Riyad Mahrez, and Phil Foden, is captained by Kyle Walker. Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne sit on the bench while Julian Alvarez captains the line.

Ederson is the backup goalkeeper, with 29-year-old Stefan Ortega, a summer acquisition from Armenia Bielefeld, starting. Young players Ben Knight, Josh Wilson-Esbrand, Luke Mbete, and Oscar Bobb are available off the bench for City, who start Cole Palmer and Rico Lewis.

Pep Guardiola, the manager of Man City, made a suggestion that he would utilise this friendly to test out new strategies, but more crucially, new players for the team. “The advantages? We’ll be together for the new players, training sessions, and time to rest in a different setting “said Guardiola.

That would indicate that Sergio Gomez, who was recently acquired from Anderlecht, has to start working. The Man City team is dealing with a few defensive injuries, so the 21-year-old left-back may use the opportunity to catch up.

110 minutes before kickoff: Barcelona is supporting another cause with their third kit, which will make its debut in this game, in addition to ALS research, which will be supported by the match itself. The Cross of Saint Jordi medal, the second-highest civilian honour given by the Catalan government after the Gold Medal of the Generalitat, was the inspiration for the third uniform, the Catalan club revealed.

The club’s official statement read, “It demonstrates Barça’s dedication to social concerns, diversity, and inclusion, essential characteristics that drive its tagline of being’more than a club’.”

FC Barcelona was one of the initial beneficiaries of the award when it was given out for the first time thirty years ago, and the team is honouring that milestone with the third kit design. Later in 2022, Lionel Messi received the honour as well, making him the second footballer after Johann Cruyff to do so.

With 120 minutes remaining until kickoff, Juan Carlos Unzue, who was given an ALS diagnosis in February 2020, will be the centre of today’s game. Camp Nou match revenues will go toward ALS research.

Lineups and team news for Barcelona vs. Man City

Last Saturday, Barcelona had trouble keeping up with a tenacious Real Sociedad team during the first half, but Ansu Fati’s entry early in the second half turned the tide and helped the Blaugrana to a 4-1 victory.

In that comeback victory, Robert Lewandowski scored his first two goals for Barcelona, the first of which came 44 seconds into the match. There are several attacking possibilities for Xavi to help the Polish striker, so deciding which trio he will use will depend on the circumstances of the particular match.

There are presently no injuries for the Barcelona manager to deal with, but Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s situation is uncertain considering the likelihood of his transfer to Chelsea. With Lewandowski on the sidelines, the Gabonese attacker does get a start.

In Barcelona’s final league game against La Real, defender Jules Kounde starts despite not having been officially registered for La Liga play, and Sergio Busquets makes his comeback from suspension. Busquets is joined by Frenkie de Jong, whose transfer issue is still ongoing.

When the match was announced, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola told fans that the team would field a formidable starting lineup, assuring reporters, “We’re going to bring all the heavy guns, don’t worry.” While not entirely truthful, that was partially true.

The Premier League team has a few injuries to deal with. The most notable example is Nathan Ake, who had a groyne injury against Newcastle on Sunday and was unable to travel with the team to Barcelona. Ruben Dias took the Dutchman’s position on Tyneside.

Despite not yet being available, Aymeric Laporte is allegedly close to making a comeback from knee surgery. While Jack Grealish flew to Spain for the match, his condition is unknown as he missed the Newcastle game due to an injury.

While Man City is making the match available on both of its streaming services, City+ and Man City Recast, Barcelona will make it available via BarcaTV+.

Recast is the Premier League team’s more affordable pay-per-view membership service, whereas City+ is a season-long subscription service to access all Man City programming, comparable to BarcaTV+.

Why are Manchester City and Barcelona competing in a charity game?
Juan Carlos Unzue, a former assistant coach under Pep Guardiola, was identified as having ALS in early 2020, hence the game has been organised to raise money for that cause.

From 2003 to 2010 and again from 2014 to 2017, Unzue, a former goalkeeper who briefly played for Barcelona (1988–1990), served as the team’s assistant coach. From 2007 until 2010, he worked alongside Guardiola at the club. After that, he was recruited to manage Numancia.

Unzue then became the manager of Racing Santander, worked as an assistant at Celta Vigo, and then returned to Barcelona under Luis Enrique. Prior to being forced to quit due to health reasons, the 55-year-old also served as manager of Girona and Celta Vigo. All revenues from ticket sales and the game itself will go to the Luzon Foundation in support of ALS research.
