Most European cities, with a few notable exceptions, do not have large populations. Some European nations are quite small, and others have several large cities rather than a single capital city, which may account for this in part. With a population of roughly 7.5 million, London is the largest city in the United Kingdom (and the third-largest in all of Europe), but there are several other significant cities, including Nottingham, Liverpool, and Birmingham, which each have populations of close to a million.

The two biggest cities in Europe are Moscow in Russia and Istanbul in Turkey (although some may dispute whether they are culturally European, and neither are part of the European Union). While Russia’s largest metropolis already has more than ten million citizens, statistics from 2018 show that Istanbul has a population of about fifteen million (Saint Petersburg also makes the top five with a population of around five million).

However, the figures show that several major European cities, including Rome (2.3 million), Paris (2.1 million), and Vienna (2.1 million), often have populations between one and three million (1.6 million). There are also a tonne of considerably smaller cities in Europe that are nonetheless significant historically and culturally. These include Amsterdam in the Netherlands, Krakow in Poland, and Naples, an Italian city with a population of about 950,000. (741,000).
