Gotham Knights Sounds Like A Big Disappointment

Gotham Knights, a video game from Warner Bros. Montreal, will be available on October 21 for the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. It follows Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing, and Red Hood as they work to keep the peace after Bruce Wayne is killed in a terrorist attack by the Court of Owls. Gotham Knights is mostly combat focused, with players teaming up to slog out missions that advance the plot and acquire stronger gear. This is in contrast to the Arkham games, which concentrated on exploration, stealth puzzles, and a Metroidvania-like arsenal of gadgets. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem like the switch to cooperative mission grinding was all that successful.

Gotham Knights Review

Gotham Knights seemed to have all the makings of the ambitious, action-packed blockbuster hit that it was obviously supposed to be from all I had seen up to this point. Who wouldn’t want a brand-new Batman: Arkham game developed for the current console generation that focuses on cooperative play? Then, after 30 hours of play, it merely continued delivering depressing news: WHAM! Unimpressive battle. POW! a mediocre, predictable tale. BIFF! Surprising design decisions for the development. THWACK! frame rates under 30. How could it get so bad, I wonder now. Some positive aspects do manage to show through, such as the spectacular open-world Gotham sandbox, but the game’s issues prevented me from really appreciating the in-the-moment criminal fighting as much as Bat-family fans should have.

We must discuss the genesis tale of Gotham Knights because it is closely related to Batman. The four third-person action games in the Arkham series are similar to Bruce Wayne in that they were born into a wealthy and well-known family. This game is not a continuation of those ones because WB Games Montreal chose to create its own interpretation of the DC comics canon, and it makes a lot of efforts to steer clear of the vigilante-based path that those games took. But it’s tough to avoid drawing comparisons to the immensely excellent Arkham games when you’re silently grappling from ledge to ledge, crawling down ventilation shafts, and bashing up squads of criminals in a rhythmic combat system.
