Last year’s merging of Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios into a single entity was the impetus for it all. The announcement shocked fans, especially when it was revealed that Hanna Barbera Studios Europe, Cartoon Network Studios’ original parent business, would continue as a separate branch.

This caused quite a stir on the internet. To quell rampant concerns of its extinction, the studio took to its own Twitter handle to address fans personally and put their fears to rest, happily stating:

Cartoon Network Announces It’s Not Shutting Down

Cartoon Network was set to be combined with Warner Bros. Animation as part of the recent merger between Warner Bros. and Discovery — but news that the newly-merged company had laid off 82 staffers across its animation, scripted, and unscripted departments caused a minor social media panic, with plenty of speculation that Cartoon Network, which was founded in 1992, would be gone for good. However, according to Variety, the layoffs are part of the newly formed conglomerate’s cost-cutting operations, along with reductions at HBO and HBO Max, all of which have witnessed staff and content reductions. Variety reportedly reviewed a message from group chairman Channing Dungey to Warner Bros. and Discovery employees, which stated that the business would have a “new streamlined structure” for animation but did not mention any specific program cancellations.

According to Variety, CNS will continue to create unique programming for Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, and HBO Max. This comes as HBO Max distances itself from adult cartoons. As the platform combined with Discovery +, HBO Max withdrew a number of animated programs.

The Cartoon Network is well-known for shows such as “Over the Garden Wall” and “Adventure Time.”

According to Complex, the original name was “The Cartoon Network,” and it began in October 1992, while the animation and production arm of CNS debuted in 1994. Ted Turner, the founder of CNN, purchased Hanna-Barbera productions in 1991 and appointed Betty Cohen as the inaugural president.

The present merging of the production and development teams is the latest in a series of changes that have occurred within Warner since the firm officially merged with Discovery Inc. earlier this year, under the supervision of CEO David Zaslav.
