5. Nigeria set to boycott AFCON 2025 qualifier in Libya

Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, is set to boycott their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya after being stranded at an airport in Al Abraq, about 230km from their intended destination of Benghazi. The Nigerian squad, which was diverted to Al Abraq instead of Benghazi on Sunday, was left locked inside the airport overnight without food or accommodation, prompting the players to refuse to play the match. Team captain William Troost-Ekong said the squad had been “completely abandoned” and called on the Nigerian government to intervene for their safe return. Nigeria’s Sports Minister John Owan Enoh expressed concern for the players’ safety, instructing the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to file a formal complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Libya’s Football Federation (LFF) denied any foul play, attributing the incident to routine air traffic disruptions and logistical challenges. However, the Nigerian team has described their treatment as a deliberate act of mind games, adding to tensions that followed Libya’s allegations of hostile treatment during their visit to Nigeria for the reverse fixture. CAF is investigating the matter, and while they are keen for the match to proceed as planned, the Nigerian players insist they will not play due to concerns over safety and the psychological trauma caused by the incident. The standoff adds another chapter to an already heated encounter, with Nigeria currently leading Group D and Libya on the verge of elimination.
