Music retailer Sanity to shut all its Australian stores

Sanity, an Australian retailer of music and entertainment, is closing its physical locations nationwide.

By the end of April, the CD and DVD retailer will shut down its physical locations in order to focus only on online sales.

“It has become hard to continue with our physical stores,” Sanity owner Ray Itaoui said. “Our customers are turning to digital for the consumption of their visual and musical content, and there is dwindling physical content accessible to sell to our customer.”

“Our internet company, Sanity will keep running and serve the many devoted clients to whom the brand has remained committed throughout the years.

Our top concern right now is making sure every member of our staff fully understands the implications for their future job and career.

“Our team is also working very hard to make sure every client receives all orders they have placed with us, including all pre-orders, which will be shipped through our online business if the store is closed by the time their order arrives,” the statement continued.

In 1992, Melbourne’s Doncaster neighbourhood welcomed the first Sanity store.

At its height, the chain reportedly had more than 150 locations, making it the most well-known music retailer in the nation.

There are approximately 50 left.

According to Mr. Itaoui, Sanity stores have lasted more than 40 years because of the dedication of the workers.

I would want to take this time to recognise the Sanity team, past and present, and express my delight in their accomplishments. I also want to thank them for their devotion, perseverance, and hard work in ensuring that they exceeded customer service requirements.

“I’m most proud of this because without it, Sanity would not have endured as long as it has.”

This news comes just after statistics showed that vinyl outsold CDs for the first time ever.

This year, vinyl sales are expected to surpass CD sales worldwide, in large part because Taylor Swift’s latest album, Midnights, shattered sales records abroad.

In Australia, vinyl record sales accounted for the largest portion of physical music sales in 2021, accounting for $29.7 million, as opposed to $24.9 million for CD albums, according to ARIA.
