What Dinosaur Has 500 Teeth ? The 30-foot-long Nigersaurus was a plant-eating dinosaur that existed 110 million years ago in the Sahara Desert of present-day Niger. Bizarre 500-toothed dinosaur

It’s been an amazing first week out there! Every dune seems to hold a remarkable discovery for us. We discovered the remains of the long-necked dinosaur Nigersaurus on the first day. You may recall that we gave the bones from the most recent trip here, which took place three years ago, the name Nigersaurus. The unique skull of this sauropod (long-necked dinosaur) contains up to 500 thin teeth. Finding the rest of this rare dinosaur will enable us to characterise it and reconstruct it for public viewing, which is one of the main objectives of this mission.

We found a skeleton a few days later, so we are rapidly approaching that objective! The tail of this skeleton is curled upward as it lies on its side. The length of the backbone’s bend is approximately 15 feet. We created tunnels between the main parts of the skeleton and gently brushed the sand from the 110 million-year-old bones. As soon as possible, we will plaster over every spot so that the skeleton can be moved from the field back to the lab.

But Nigersaurus is more than just that. Chris led the group to a flat stretch of purple-colored sandstone where he had discovered a young Nigersaurus’ upper jaw, which was small enough to fit on top of a silver dollar. This Nigersaurus hatchling had probably just been alive for a few months before it perished and became petrified.

A new carnivore

The bones of a brand-new meat-eating dinosaur were partially revealed at Gabe’s feet as she crossed a remarkably flat area. She removed the sand off her upper jaw with a brush. Hip bones and a portion of the backbone were nearby. The bones are from a skeleton that would be roughly 30 feet long, so this was a nasty client! As the field season progresses, we hope to discover additional proof of this species with pointed teeth.

A huge crocodile

More than simply dinosaurs are what we’re looking for. All the creatures and plants that were present 110 million years ago along the old streams and forests are what we’re looking for. During our first week of work, one of the most frequent fossils we came across belonged to an enormous crocodile by the name of Sarcosuchus.

This creature was much bigger than any crocodile in existence today. We believe it may have been over 40 feet long based on the 6-foot skull we discovered in the first week. Its back had armour plates that were one foot wide. To get a sense of just how enormous this monster was, we even spread out the squad.

To dig a new site, Hans has been assisting Allison and Dave with a crew. We discovered another juvenile skull of the same species resting next to the large one as we searched around the larger one. Knowing full well that it would weigh about 600 pounds when covered in plaster, they chiselled a slab of rock that contained both skulls.

The joke-turned-meme has gone viral on social media, mostly on Reddit.

By implying that the term is comparable to the N-word, young jesters on the website are aiming to startle unaware internet users.

In September 2019, it first appeared that the warning against conducting the search had started to spread.

“Whatever you do, don’t google ‘dinosaur with 500 teeth,'” a Reddit user who has since deactivated their account wrote in /r/teenagers.

Numerous memes have been produced since then with captions like “Do not Google a dinosaur with 500 teeth. The worst error of my life “.

Some people appear to have used the meme as a code for the actual racist epithet, as in the remark, “OK dinosaur with 500 fangs.”

However, the Republic of the Niger, where it was discovered, is really mentioned in its name.

The landlocked nation of West Africa is where dinosaur fossils were first discovered in 1976.

It wasn’t given the name Nigersaurus taqueti until more comprehensive bones were discovered in 1999 during expeditions headed by American palaeontologist Paul Sereno.

The scientific name “taqueti” honours the French palaeontologist Philippe Taquet, who discovered the first remains in 1976, while the generic name “Nigersaurus” means “Niger reptile.”

It was found in the Nigeran region of Gadoufaua in the Elrhaz Formation.
