The season will start on December 4 with the 2022 Australian 35km Race Walk Championships in Melbourne, just a few days after Summer officially begins, before our emerging talent makes their presence felt at the Chemist Warehouse Australian All Schools Track and Field Championships in Adelaide.

Before the World Tour Challenger meets and State Championships start, the season will kick off with the renowned Zatopek:10, which includes the Australian 10,000m Championships. In mid-January, the selection trials for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships, which are scheduled to take place in Bathurst on February 18, will also take place.

The Brisbane Track Classic, a silver category meet on the World Athletics Continental Tour, will be held in Australia, supporting Australian athletes as they continue to accumulate vital points for the world rankings needed to compete on the international arena. The Adelaide Invitational, the Sydney Track Classic, and upcoming plans for the renowned Melbourne Track Classic in February are all included on the World Athletics Continental Tour.

The 100th Australian Track and Field Championships (30 March–2 April) and the Australian Junior (under 14 to under 18) Track and Field Championships (13–17 April) will also be taking place in a historic year for Australian athletics. Both events are proudly supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland and Brisbane City Council through Brisbane Economic Development Agency. These two competitions will decide the nation’s top athletes over more than 300 events.

The 2023 Australian Track and Field Championships will draw the nation’s top talent in their pursuit of global glory as they lay down a season of work at Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre. The competition will serve as the selection trial for both the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest and the 2023 World Para Athletics Championships in Paris.

Due to scheduling conflicts with a number of sporting events in Western Australia during the summer, both championship events—which were originally scheduled to take place in Perth—have been moved to Queensland. Tourism WA has since agreed to host both the 2025 and 2028 editions of the Championships.

Athletics Australia CEO Peter Bromley said, “After a tremendous year for our competitors at the World Athletics Championships, World Under 20 Championships, and Commonwealth Games, we’re incredibly thrilled about what’s coming up this season.”

“Australia’s finest track and field athletes will have plenty of opportunities to demonstrate their skills this summer as they compete to earn berths at the major championships in 2023. This summer is also a chance for our route athletes and participants who are rising through the ranks to test their dedication in the disciplines of their choice.

After having the two Australian Championships events in Sydney for the previous two years, Bromley expressed his excitement about moving them up north to Brisbane.

The Australian Junior Track and Field Championships and the Australian Track and Field Championships, which serve as selection trials for the two major championships held the following year, are taking place in Brisbane this year, which is exciting.

“I’d want to ask all of our Australian athletics community’s friends, families, and supporters to mark these days in your calendars and to show their support for our domestic season. This summer is the perfect time to start getting to know our athletes and supporting them as they compete in the Paris Olympics and Paralympics the following year.
