Born in Shanghai in 1936 to Australian-born Chinese parents, Dr. Victor Chang’s early life was marked by significant moves due to the Second Sino-Japanese War. The loss of his mother to breast cancer at a young age profoundly influenced him, pushing him towards a career in medicine. In 1984, Dr. Victor Chang led a team at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney to perform Australia’s youngest heart transplant on 14-year-old Fiona Coote. This landmark surgery not only showcased his surgical prowess but also his vision for making transplant surgery more accessible and successful in Australia. His unit’s high success rate, with over 90% of patients surviving beyond the first year, set a global benchmark for heart transplantation.

Dr. Chang’s legacy extends beyond his surgical achievements. He was instrumental in founding the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute, aimed at advancing research in heart diseases. His work in developing an artificial heart valve and his efforts in international medical collaboration, especially with China, highlighted his commitment to extending his expertise for global health benefits. His contributions were acknowledged with the Companion of the Order of Australia in 1986.

Dr. Victor Chang was married to Ann Simmons, whom he met in England during his training. Together, they had three children: Vanessa, Matthew, and Marcus. After his untimely death, his family continued his legacy through the Victor Chang Foundation, focusing on education and innovation in cardiac surgery. Ann Simmons played a significant role in managing the foundation post-tragedy.

Tragically, Dr. Victor Chang was murdered on July 4, 1991, in Sydney during a failed extortion attempt by two men. His death shocked the nation and the world, leading to a state funeral and widespread mourning. The incident highlighted the vulnerability of public figures and the impact of crime on society’s brightest minds.
