Elon Musk Launches X: The Next Generation of Twitter
On Sunday, Elon Musk tweeted, “And soon we shall bid adieu to the twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds.” He stated that he was thinking about changing the company’s logo. At 12:06 a.m. ET (04:06 GMT), the social media site’s billionaire owner added in a post: “If a good enough X logo is posted tonight, we’ll make it live worldwide tomorrow.”
Musk uploaded an image of a flickering “X,” and then in a Twitter Spaces audio chat said “Yes” when asked if the Twitter logo would change, adding that “it should have been done a long time ago.”
Musk indicated that the URL “X.com” will now automatically redirect users to Twitter, and that a trial new logo was expected to go live sometime on Sunday.
“X will be the platform that can deliver, well….everything,” Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino tweeted on Sunday.
Since Musk purchased Twitter in October, the company’s name has been changed to X Corp, alluding to the billionaire’s goal of developing a “super app” on scale with China’s WeChat.
Experts in social media doubt Musk’s “everything app”
Twitter’s new logo is expected to be more streamlined and futuristic, similar to Tesla and SpaceX. The rebranding, however, has social media expert Jennifer Grygiel questioning Musk’s abilities to create an innovative Twitter.
Professor Grygiel of Syracuse University told NPR, “I’m not sure he has enough trust from his user base to get people to actually exchange money or attach any type of financial institution to his app.”
Grygiel added that Musk’s decisions to remove blue checks, fire thousands of Twitter workers, and reinstate problematic accounts affected Twitter’s reputation.

Musk likes the letter “X” a lot, but no one knows why.
Elon Musk has been noted for years to have a fascination with the letter X, though he gave nothing in the way of an explanation for this.
Musk’s first business was an online bank, which he called X.com. Later, when the company partnered with a competitor to become PayPal, that name was dropped.
“Back then, everyone was attempting to talk him out of naming the company because of the sexual connotations,” Vance said. “But he liked it, so he stuck with it.”
“X” is the name of the third type of electric car released by Tesla in 2015. Musk’s space company is called SpaceX. And in 2020, Musk and the Canadian musician Grimes, who was his partner at the time, gave their youngest kid the name “X Æ A-12.”
