According to Realtor.com, Biden has been fascinated in real estate since he was in high school, which has frequently put a strain on his finances.
In his 2007 book, “Promises To Keep,” he stated, “My notion of Saturday fun was to hop in the Corvette with Neilia [his first wife, who passed away in 1972] and drive around the Wilmington region scouting open houses, houses for sale, and land where we could build.”
As a result, Biden is leaving behind a number of homes that he and his family have shared over the years, including two in his native Delaware, a rental in McLean, Virginia, and his former official residence at the US Naval Observatory when he was vice president of the United States. Biden is now moving into the most recognizable house in America.
Williamsburg, Delaware
This Wilmington home was constructed by Joe Biden in the late 1990s. It is currently valued at $2 million.
A three-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom home in Wilmington, Delaware serves as the Bidens’ principal residence. In 1998, Biden paid $350,000 for the land that would become the site of his 6,850 square foot residence, according to Realtor.com. The Wall Street Journal claimed that the property is currently thought to be valued at least $2 million.
The family commutes five minutes to St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church for worship. Following the disturbances at the Capitol on January 6, Biden was seen leaving the church.
Early in the 2010s, the Bidens considered selling the house to pay for Beau Biden’s cancer treatments; Beau passed away from brain cancer in 2015. Biden reportedly requested a loan from President Obama so he wouldn’t have to sell his home.
Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
In 2017, Joe and Jill Biden purchased a home on Delaware Beach.
In 2017, the Bidens paid $2.74 million for their 4,800 square foot vacation property. According to a Long & Foster listing, the square, beach-style home close to the Gordon Pond Wildlife Area boasts six bedrooms and five and a half baths, three interior fireplaces, big windows, hardwood floors, and even a dog wash station.
According to the listing, the three-story home has a wraparound porch, a balcony, an outdoor fireplace, a grilling station outside, and outdoor showers.
Jill and I have fantasised about purchasing a beachfront home throughout our professional lives so that we can bring the whole family there. When they purchased the home, Biden stated in a statement, “We feel very fortunate that we’re now able to make that happen and are looking forward to spending time with our family in the location that matters most to us in the world.
Washington, DC
Notably, the Bidens resided in a 9,150-square-foot house on the grounds of the Naval Observatory, the vice president’s official residence, from 2008 to 2016, while Vice President-Elect Joe Biden served President Obama.
The six-bedroom home at 1 Observatory Circle was constructed in 1893, but since it became the vice president’s official residence in 1974, it has undergone $2.6 million in renovations. According to accounts, the house boasts a wraparound porch in the veranda style and even a bunker.
Victoria Hagan, a designer who offered her talents in 2009, assisted the Bidens in making the Victorian, woodsy home their own.
Former vice president Dan Quayle, who served in that position under President George H.W. Bush added a heated pool, leaving his mark all over the house. According to The Hill, the pool made him Biden’s “favourite VP.”
The Cheneys renovated the kitchen while the Gores planted plants and shrubs. Joe and Jill Biden also left behind a tree plaque that read, “Joe loves Jill, Valentine’s Day 2010,” along with “Biden blue” crockery in an English cabinet.
McLean, Virginia
In 2017, the Bidens paid an estimated $20,000 per month to rent their five-bedroom, seven-bath property.
According to a Sotheby’s International Realty listing, the 12,000 square foot house, which was built in 1989, has large, full-length windows that provide views of the Potomac river. According to a Washington Fine Properties listing, the brick home boasts eight fireplaces, a 20-car garage, dark hardwood flooring, walk-in closets, a balcony, high ceilings, a gym, a sauna, and a two-story lobby.
Venture capitalist Mark Ein purchased the Georgian home, which sits on a single acre, in 2016 for $4.25 million. According to a Wall Street Journal source, Alexander Haig, a former secretary of state, originally owned the home, which still includes his old desk in the living room.
The Bidens rented the McLean mansion partly because Jill, 69, was a full-time English professor at Northern Virginia Community College and partly because they wanted to live near their grandchildren. However, the WSJ report claims that they are no longer renting the property.
The rental listing for McLean, Virginia, is handled by Mike Anastasia of Long & Foster. When contacted for a remark, he remained silent.
