1964

In Southern Ontario, Johnson started his professional wrestling career in 1964. Shortly after his debut, he legally changed his name to “Rocky Johnson.” Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight boxing champion, and Rocky Marciano, two of his favourite boxing legends, are honoured by the moniker Rocky Johnson.

1978

Johnson recalled meeting his first wife Una Sparks at a dance while he was learning to box in his autobiography Soulman. Una was a devoted Jehovah’s Witness who was from Cherrybrook, Nova Scotia. He thanked their two children, Wanda and Curtis, at his 2008 WWE Hall of Fame induction. He started dating Ata Maivia, the daughter of “High Chief” Peter Maivia, a legendary wrestler, while he was still married to Una. After Maivia and Johnson participated as a tag team in an independent circuit match, Ata met Rocky. Maivia was against the connection, not because he had anything against Johnson personally, but more because of his line of work because he was aware of the hardships faced by wrestlers’ families back home while they were on the road all the time. Dwayne, their son, was born on May 2, 1972. In order to support his two families, Johnson claimed to have adopted a modest lifestyle while on the road, living off of beer, sliced cheese, and bologna. He also claimed that, “unlike most of the other boys, I wasn’t a partier.” He doesn’t say whether Una was aware about Ata and Dwayne, but he claims she gave him the choice to stop wrestling or to divorce from her because Jehovah’s Witnesses “didn’t believe in blood sport”. He claimed that he and Una split amicably and that they were still close friends. On December 21, 1978, he applied for a marriage licence in Florida to wed Ata after getting a divorce in Texas. They got divorced in 2003. At the time of his passing, he was wed to speech therapist Sheila Northern.

1982

Johnson fought with Buddy Rose, Adrian Adonis, Don Muraco, Greg Valentine, Mike Sharpe, and Sharpe in 1982. Then he was put in a tag team with Tony Atlas. For the Tag Team Championship on the December 10, 1983 episode of Championship Wrestling, they defeated the Wild Samoans (Afa and Sika) (taped November 15). They held a WWF championship as the first black guys ever to do so. They were marketed as “The Soul Patrol” as a unit.

1991

Johnson coached his son Dwayne to wrestle with Pat Patterson when he retired in 1991. Johnson initially opposed his son’s entry into what he understood to be a very challenging industry, but eventually agreed to coach him under the condition that he wouldn’t be lenient. Johnson had a key role in getting Dwayne signed to a WWF developmental contract and eventually given the ring name “Rocky Maivia” in honour of both Rocky Johnson and Peter Maivia. Johnson initially appeared on TV during his son’s matches, and he entered the ring to defend him after The Sultan and The Iron Sheik assaulted him at WrestleMania 13. Following the failure of the Rocky Maivia character, Johnson was not seen again on camera, and shortly Dwayne gained crossover appeal as the haughty villain The Rock.

2003

Johnson was employed as a trainer for Ohio Valley Wrestling, a WWE developmental territory, in early 2003 but was fired in may. On November 29, 2003, he returned to the ring and defeated Mabel in a boxing fight at Memphis Wrestling. Along with his father-in-law, “High Chief” Peter Maivia, Johnson was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame on February 25, 2008. On March 29, 2008, Johnson and his father-in-law were both honoured with Hall of Fame inductions by The Rock, Johnson’s son.

2019

Johnson joined the Board of Directors of the International Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame on December 20, 2019.

2020

Johnson passed away from a pulmonary embolism on January 15, 2020, at the age of 75, in the Lutz, Florida house that Dwayne had purchased for him. The blood clot that caused it originated in his leg’s deep vein thrombosis. Johnson “felt he had the flu or something,” B. Brian Blair told the Associated Press, but he declined to go to the doctor. In his homage, Dwayne said: “I’m in pain, and you gave it your all in the ring after living a very full, very difficult, and barrier-breaking life. I’ll always be your proud and appreciative son and I love you, dad.” Rocky was “a fantastic man, great friend,” according to Hulk Hogan, who also called him “one of just a handful that was polite and helpful when I first broke in.”

Family Life

Rocky was married three times to Una Johnson, Ata Maivia and Dana Martin, whom he married in 2004. In addition to Dwayne, he had two other children, Curtis and Wanda.
